Hexagram 57 · The Gentle 巽

Xun is wind placed over wind: two trigrams each made of one yielding line beneath two firm ones. Wind has no edge, yet it enters closed rooms, bends whole forests over years, and wears mountains into sand. The core theme is influence that works by repetition and penetration rather than by a single push. The judgment promises only small success, because gentle force never produces a dramatic result in one moment. What it produces instead is a slow, thorough change that reaches into corners a hammer would never touch. Persistence is the whole method.

In everyday life Xun looks like the colleague who never raises their voice in meetings but sends the same clear proposal three times, each version slightly better, until the team adopts it as if it had always been the plan. Or it looks like a parent who repeats a boundary calmly every evening rather than exploding once. The hexagram warns about a shadow side too: wind can be so diffuse it disappears. If you find yourself hinting endlessly without ever stating what you want, you have taken gentleness past its useful point.

To hold Xun well, decide on one direction and keep returning to it. The image speaks of repeating a command and then acting on it: say the thing plainly, say it again, then follow through so words gather weight. This is not the moment for a grand gesture or an ultimatum. Timing favors the long, patient approach, and it favors seeking someone with more experience whose steadiness can anchor your own. Ask whether your influence is entering the situation or just circling it. Wind that finds no opening simply moves on.
