Cui sets Dui, the lake, over Kun, the earth. Water gathers in a low place on the ground and becomes a lake; earth receives, water pools, and life collects around it. The theme is assembly, whether of people, resources, or attention. The judgment describes a ruler going to the ancestral temple, which is the old picture of a community gathering around something larger than any one member. Two conditions run through it: there must be a worthy center, and there must be a real, generous contribution. Gatherings without a center scatter; gatherings without offering become transactions.
