Hexagram 40 · Deliverance 解

Xie places Zhen, thunder, above Kan, water. A storm that has been building for days finally breaks; the rain falls, the thunder rolls, and afterward the atmosphere is washed and light. This hexagram follows Obstruction as its release. The core theme is the loosening of a knot, whether a crisis, a grudge, or a period of being stuck. Movement returns. The lines describe removing what caused the tension, then not lingering in the drama once it is gone.

In modern life Xie appears when a long standoff ends: the difficult client finally signs, the health scare resolves, the argument that hung over a household is spoken through and settled. Picture two roommates who avoided each other for a month, then have one honest conversation and feel the whole apartment lighten. Deliverance says the important work now is not to relive the tension but to reset quickly, forgive what can be forgiven, and get back to ordinary life. Storms that are replayed endlessly never fully clear.

To hold Xie well, act early on the tasks the release makes possible, and then let the rest return to normal. Timing matters in both directions: if something needs finishing, do it promptly while the momentum lasts; if nothing is required, do not invent drama to fill the space. Pardon your own errors along with others'. The image pairs deliverance with mercy for a reason: clemency prevents the next storm from gathering. Move toward the easier ground and keep the air clear.
